This iconic brand came to life in 1892 as a complete outfitters to the sporting gentleman. Abercrombie & Fitch was a legendary New York City destination. Their Big Apple flagship store wa an outdoorsman’s emporium with all manner of gear and apparel from rifles to tents, rugged winter hunting coats, waterproof fishing overalls and elegant countrywear that was clubhouse appropriate. The Abercrombie label was seen adorning the finest sportswear of the most discerning Knickerbockers. Their field wristwatches were a must-have too and every well-to-do man-in-the-know was on their catlaogue distribution list. The brand’s revered status, however, did not age well and the A&F label had disappeared into all but obscurity when it was revived in the 1980s and 1990s by Limited Brands who turned the brand into the recognisable mall and high street fashion marque that it is today. No longer made in America, their offer is very much casual fashion in the mall premium category. However, their vintage pieces are highly sought after.

From humble origins, Aclima has grown to become a trusted maker of high-end wool accessories for rugged outdoor use in the most extreme and unforgiving environments. The label was established in 1939 in Drammen, Norway, just outside of Oslo, when entrepreneur Eivind Johansen realised his vision of using expired felt from the local timber industry to make sustainable insoles in an early example of sustainable business and circular economies. The brand produced a wide variety of linings for footwear and other industries for many years under the name Tuna Tekstil A/S before relaunching as Aclima in 1998. The rebrand was part of a wider strategy to broaden their offer and enter into new markets. Aclima produces a wide array of wool clothing, specialising in underlayers and baselayers, for hardy mountaineers, explorers, skiiers and workmen to keep their bodies climate controlled in extreme weather. The brand continues to manufacture their product in Europe, predominantly from factories in Estonia using Merino wool imported from New Zealand.

A Down East heritage label, Acorn began in Lewiston, Maine in 1973 as a manufacturer of comfortable, handmade slipper socks. Borrowing from the moccasin tradition, Acorn is a purveyor of extremely comfortable indoor footwear and iconic camp slippers to keep your “dogs” warm, comfy and happy. The label produces a broad variety of slippers and house shoes for men and women. The brand’s founder, David Quinn, sold the business to Totes Isotoner, the accessories conglomerate, in 2011, where it sits alongside stablemates Totes, Isotoner and Manzella. Since 1928, Acton Canada has been making durable, hard-wearing work and safety boots for the most demanding tradesmen. The brand, hailing from Acton Vale, Québec, from which it takes its name, was a pioneer in the rubber boots sector, serviced the emergency services, police, fire brigade, military, linesmen, miners, foresters and general workers. The brand had a brief relationship with AirBoss of America Corp, a specialised rubber manufacturer in the early 2000s before being acquired in 2004 by Régence, a Québecois family-owned enterprise that produces a range of outdoor footwear and apparel under its own brands and under licence for international brands. Whilst some Acton products are still handmade in Canada, most of its production has been outsourced to China.

The Adler Co was a legendary hosier from Cincinnati, Ohio, which began manufacturing in 1860 as part of Fairmount Woolen Mills. They produced a range of socks for young men of good taste, with their fuzzy socks becomming particularly iconic and a key part of the American Trad / Ivy League look and subsequent revivals. The socks were thick and luxurious, offering great comfort to the wearer. They were a popular choice amongst working men and serious outdoorsmen too, even if the brand came to be most associated with the preppy look, especially when worn with Bass Weejuns. The brand was acquired by Burlington Industries in 1959 before being phased out completely by 1970. Deadstock can still be found occasionally in the most astute clothing stores and, more likely, in thrift stores in the United States and Japan.

Aegean is a maker of traditional Greek fisherman hats and other felt hats, all handmade from their ancient atelier on the outskirts of Athens, Greece. The hats have adorned the heads of the Mediterranean’s native fisherman for generations but became an iconic stylish must-have in the 1950s and 1960s when various celebrity clientele were spotted wearing Aegean pieces, most notably John Lennon. Aegean owes its fame to its American licensing partner, Aegean Imports, which was established by two brothers from San Francisco’s Greek diaspora who managed distribution of the brand to the finest hat shops and outfitters across North America. The hats are still made by hand, the old way, in Greece and are available from the most discerning hatters.

A brand of William Lipson Company of Boston, Massachusetts, Aero was launched in 1947 and quickly became a popular maker of mens’ and boys’ wool coats. The brand was particularly known for its trench coats and flight jackets, often baring a subtle aviation theme or motif. The jackets were well-regarded, affording high-quality craftsmanship for the most demanding working man. The brand lasted throughout the 1950s and 1960s before disappearing and little is known of the marque today. This iconic brand of American hard-wearing overalls and denim workwear was so-named for a massive construction project: a big dam. This label was launched by Irwin-Phillips Co., a dry goods and department store situated in the town of Keokuk, Iowa which first opened in 1856. Keokuk had become an important trading post, located where the Mississippi and Des Moines Rivers meet. It had become an epicentre for the fur trade and was a key staging post for the Mormon Trail. Famously, it was home to Mark Twain’s brother. Irwin Phillips produced a range of apparel to cater to the burgeoning industry in the area, mostly under their Indian Head brand. In 1913, construction began on Lock and Dam No. 19 and Keokuk was about to become a hub of development activity. In 1924, the company launched its Big Dam brand (effectively a rebranding of Indian Head apparel), to cater to the engineers and labourers working on the project. Irwin Phillips also produced Tom Boy Hosiery. The Big Dam brand later expanded into westernwear with their Rodeo Pants line. Irwin Phillips closed down in 1984 and their house labels are no longer in production. The iconic department store building was, somewhat fittingly, demolished to make way for another major construction project: the Keokuk-Hamilton Bridge. Big Dam and Indian Head apparel are highly sought after by American and Japanese collectors.

A lesser-known overalls brand from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Indian Head was launched as the apparel and workwear brand of Irwin-Phillips Co. of Keokuk, Iowa. Keokuk was an important trading post, where the Des Moines and Mississippi Rivers meet, and had been a fast-growing industrial hub in the early years of the American west. A frontier town of sorts, Keokuk was many passing workers and mountainmen, heading north and west to seek their fortune. In later years, many would also come to Keokuk as an industrial destination in its own right. These men needed the garb, and Irwin-Phillips produced the garments. A department store, Irwin-Phillips launched the Indian Head brand in approximately 1871. With the construction of the big dam project in the town in 1913, Irwin-Phillips would introduce their Big Dam workwear label and phased out the Indian Head brand.

Tom Boy Hosiery was a proprietary line of socks and stockings distributed by the Irwin-Phillips Company, a major wholesale dry goods, notions, underwear, and garment distributor based in Keokuk, Iowa. The company was founded in 1856 and began to manufacture its own lines in garments and accessories from 1871 onwards, investing heavily in their own factory. The Tom Boy Hosiery brand was their socks and underwear label which supplied heavy-duty socks for the frontier markets, alongside stablemate brands Big Dam and Indian Head.
