Strictly speaking, the correct term for the item we are speaking about is ‘Veste de Travail’ as Bleu de Travail simply means workers’ blues (no reference to music) and incorporates dungarees, pants and overalls albeit that the term most commonly is used to refer to the iconic French work jacket.
The jacket, beloved of and synonymous with artists across the world, presents a carefree nonchalance with a hint of formality that carries great appeal to the modern libertine. However, the garment’s origins are far more humble, and herein lies the piece’s workwear credentials.
Made from reinforced cotton the jacket, as introduced originally by workwear and now -pseudo-fashion label Le Mont Saint Michel, was the go-to jacket for labourers, railwaymen and, indeed, les artistes who sought a durable, versatile jacket well able to handle the rigours of their trade.
The buttonholes are stitched to ensure longevity and pockets on the breast and hips are externally fastened allowing for greater wear and tear without damage and ensuring full functionality. Originally, these jackets were fabricated with a notched lapel, akin to a more formal blazer, but modern interpretations include a coach jacket collar which has not only made this garment more practical in inclement weather but has greatly helped elevate the appeal of the jacket as a streetwear and high fashion staple.
Paired with work pants in similar bleu de travail or perhaps with drawstring trousers, the jacket has amassed a loyal fanbase amongst modern artists and streetwear followers alike, although you will still find many pipe-smoking, red wine drinking artistic types residing in the studios of Paris donning the same.
Many brands now carry their own interpretations of this iconic workwear staple in their range, however original heritage pieces are still made in France by French workwear legends including the likes of Le Mont Saint Michel, Vétra and Danton.
